Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Corporate Headshot Photographer
When companies plan a corporate headshot day, the goal is simple: get updated photos for the team. But once the planning gets going and logistics come into play, it can turn out to be a lot more complicated. Between coordinating schedules, communicating expectations, and getting those final professional and polished shots, it can feel like a little bit of organized chaos. The corporate photographer you choose plays a big role in how that experience feels for your company and how the images turn out.
Here are a few questions worth asking before you move forward:
How do you ensure consistency across all employees’ photos?
Image consistency is critical for helping companies maintain a cohesive look and feel across social media, web, internal directories, and physical marketing materials.
Make sure you clarify expectations with your corporate headshot photographer on what sorts of consistency you’d like to see across employee photos, including background color, cropping, attire expectations, etc.
Our process involves working directly with company leadership to select an appropriate backdrop color and lighting setup. When employees show up to get their images taken, we gently coach them towards proper stance and make continual lighting and camera adjustments to ensure that each person’s headshot matches their colleague’s. In post-production, we calibrate colors and cropping in line with final image expectations, and are always happy to make small adjustments when needed.
What does the experience look like for each team member?
Not everyone enjoys being in front of a camera. Some people walk in with confidence, but others feel unsure the moment they get in front of the camera. (We hear “I hate having my photo taken!” a lot.)
A good corporate headshot photographer has a process that helps everyone feel comfortable quickly so the session stays efficient, expressions feel natural, and the final images look polished but authentic.
During our corporate on-site shoots, we arrive early to meet you and set up. We test our lighting before your team members arrive. Ideally, we dedicate 5-10 minutes per person so people never feel rushed and have a great time, which means great smiles! However, we will move as efficiently as your schedule requires. We offer our signature facial expression and posing coaching (with some lighthearted small-talk and well-placed jokes in between) to help each person feel at ease. A relaxed subject makes for a better – and more authentic – photo!
After the image has been captured, each person has a chance to look through their images and pick their preferred shot on a screen directly next to the camera.
Is retouching included?
Many photographers include retouching in the cost of their services, but it’s always worthwhile to double-check! Professional retouching should feel natural, with the goal to present people at their best, not to make them look overly edited or different from how they appear in real life.
We’re big proponents of the “less is more” approach and are happy to soften lines and shadows, even out skin tones, minimize temporary blemishes, and brighten your eyes and smile. Also, we avoid reliance on AI for batch retouching to keep things as natural as possible.
How do you handle larger teams or multiple departments?
For companies with larger groups, organization matters. Staying on-time and on schedule so that the day runs smoothly for leadership and employees alike is incredibly important.
Our process is simple: we partner directly with your organization to create a customized schedule for your employees, ensuring each corporate headshot session runs smoothly, efficiently, and without overcrowding.
When working with senior leadership, we prioritize dedicated time slots, allowing for a more personalized experience. This gives each executive additional time and flexibility for multiple looks, ensuring your company’s leaders are fully prepared for any PR opportunities or speaking engagements.
What is the turnaround time and delivery process?
Clear expectations around delivery help avoid delays and keep internal projects moving. If your company needs images within a day or a few days, make sure to clarify those expectations with your photographer before booking.
At Joe Fang Headshots, we deliver the files to you within 7-10 business days. Your team will have full usage rights and receive high-quality jpeg files that are print-ready and files sized for online website & social media.
